according to recorded history books & teachers, they needed slaves to work the plantations, such as cattling, herding, cutting sugar canes, working in the mines, fishing, working as maids/nannies (to look after also the masters children), and many other things too, depending on how many slaves and how hard they would work, the masters would get a profit out of them, for example, if the slaves cut enough sugar, they would sell em and depending on the weight, the more it weighs the more you got payed.
Most slavers were bad people, but there were also good ones (ones that treated slaves like family) and would even cry for em, there's been cases, where the slave master would marry the black woman and would get along just fine (equally) while even still owning slaves, without her being one, so she's pretty much a free woman
In the beginning it was the Natives but they started to quickly die out or whitening (mixed) so they imported large numbers of African slaves from Africa.
To answer that second question, yes (majority-wise) they were treated like animals (like a dog owner who beats its dog), because they payed for the slaves, they treated the slaves like animals or machines, if they did not work hard enough (even though they did) they would whipped them out 50-150 lashes everytime they do not cut enough canes or work hard enough, but as the masters owned them the masters did as they pleased, raping Black women, torturing Black slaves, whipping them for no reason, and or burning them (iv read of such cause), there were even some few cases if slavers killing slaves for no reason just for their hate against darker skin
Well, if i was in that time and a Black-Slave, i would not be able to do much, most ppl think that today's nutrition, size, and strength is capable of taking down slavers on their own, but the reality is that i would say ppl back then were much stronger than us now or about the same since they had to actually do physical work for years, there's been cases where slaves had to actually pick up mules (with on their back with their legs) to cross a river or even a small horse (350-450 lbs), log lifting, blacksmiths, lumberjack, house and bridge building, stone flipping to cross rivers or block off paths (they were very strong ppl back then) even compared to now yet the whites or slavers had it all under control, with patrolers controlling the area with 5 to 10 men all armed, horses (hard to out run em), whips, and even knives/machettes
I would stay low till i know for sure i could escape but never fight them
