Ottomans started as official frontiersmen (Uç Bey) of the Seljuks of Rum... Ottomans grew into a Beylik (principate) position after they took in 1299 important cities and towns from Byzantines who tried to massacre them.
In 1300 A.D. this new Ottoman principate accepted borderguard position of the Seljuks.
They truly became independent in 1308 when Ilkhanids definitely removed Seljuks.

Meh Ottomans were far way better. Seljuks were just typical horsemen who had the advantage in numbers.
