Qaddafi's latest gambit: Convince the European public that they really want him to stick around, with all the stability that entails.

He spoke today to TV network France 24.

This quote (via Reuters) certainly stands out: "There are millions of blacks who could come to the Mediterranean to cross to France and Italy, and Libya plays a role in security in the Mediterranean."

Bear in mind that after the fall of Tunisia's Ben Ali, Italy has seen a wave of immigrants that continue today.

The millions figure might just be typical African verbal blowing up of things. However he is correct that we can expect a lot of blacks trying to cross the Mediterranean if he falls. Small last hope fleets are already being organised in Tunisia and other countries.

It could be a new Eight Nation Alliance like in the Boxer Rebellion. We all invade, take over, and 'restore order'.

It won't happen though. The best bet is probably to hope the West is saved from itself with Qadhafi crushing these rebels ASAP. Though there's an argument for backing the rebels too, assuming he doesn't win quickly.
