Germany is one thousand years older, it's logical. The amount of culture, technology and innovations were already immense when the United States were still in its infancy. It's a matter of age and ages. To each his own.

I just got done reading 'Human Accomplishment' by Charles A. Murray. This book looks at who is the top ranked in human history in the area of human accomplishment.

    Germans
    Technology Gutenberg
Astronomy Kepler (#2 all time astronomer)
Chemistry Scheele (#3 all time chemist)
Medicine Robert Koch (#3 all time medicine guy)
Math (#1 all time Math Leonhard Euler - Swiss German)
Religion Martin Luther (founder of protestant)
Philosophy Immanuel Kant (#3 all time greatest philosopher)
Music Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Haydn, Handel (#1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 greatest all time musicians, total German domination)
Art Albrecht Dürer (#5 all time)
    Literature Goethe (#2 all time)

I think the only highly ranked American was Thomas Edison who scored #1 all time in technology.

Fortunately the US defense establishment took the lead in research to help create the internet so you could treat us to this highly informative post.

So should we take this to mean that Germany has contributed more to astronomy than Nasa based on a centuries long dead astronomer?

Btw, Swiss Germans don't count. They're Swiss.

America stretches from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego; it has 35 countries in total. The pre-columbian cultures were fairly developed but not on part with Europe at all. If one were to group all technological contributions made by pre-columbian + post-columbian americans up to our days, I'd bet it'll lag behind Germany.

Unless this thread was ignorantly made to refer the U.S, in which case it will have even less chance to compete againts Deutschland.

Well, as much as it would bolster America's chances in this poll to include the weighty civilizational contributions of Venezuela to the world, I'm afraid you're right; I don't have Bolivia and Paraguay in mind for this poll.
