Many years ago when I was in my 30's and my biological clock was ticking like Marisa Tomei's character in My Cousin Vinny I tried the eHarmony dating site for a year. I didn't meet anyone in person.

Tonight I looked at WhiteDate.net but didn't sign up. Then I looked at eHarmony again, took the compatability quiz, and signed up for a 12 month membership. I'm past menopause so now there is no pressure to have babies. They already have a long list of men in my age range within 30 miles of me. I logged out. I'll wait and see if any message me.

Has anyone else here tried dating websites? Which ones?

speaking anecdotally,
in my experience — no romantic relationship that developed in a discussion-forum
was success-full once the couple met in real-life.

they may have a very brief sexual relationship, but...

persons that meet in their real-life situation,
where they can directly experience expressed emotions facially,
hear the other person's voice, smell them, et cætera —

have an authentic attraction.

working the cash-register at my book-store,
my old mensa philosophy forum at ucsd,
and training clients in my palæstra
exposed me to far more girls than most men ever encounter.

some one that does not have that level of exposure
may have a problem meeting enough persons
to find an acceptable partner.

increasing your circulation in real-life situations
that interest you (not bars or other artificial situations)
leads to more exposure with persons that share your interests.

I consider dating sites good as you can process a huge number of individuals. Of course you should aim at quickly making a real life meeting or discard the individual in question.

Not going along that priciples means to waste time and energy. It makes no sense to spend time on someone based on - often wrong - imaginations.

Btw. in Germany many dating sites are free. There are loads of respective facebook groups for singles and you also have portals with free advertising, chatting etc.

eHarmony emailed to tell me I have my first match but he has cats (I'm allergic), likes to go fishing and kayaking (I don't), etc. Our compatibility score is only 92, which sounds great at first but the scores go from 60 to 140.

My cousin met her husband through one. My friends used one, but they kept it from me because they thought that I would make fun of them. When we had weekend outings, "Frick and Frack", would go into a private room and compare notes with each other where I couldn't hear them. After a certain amount of time, I thought that they were talking smack about me behind my back, so I lost my temper one night ("why are you guys always going off in private rooms like that?"), and they spilled the beans, and "Frick" eventually met "Mrs Frick", so Elizabeth might meet her new Colonel.

I've already regretted signing up but I read there are no refunds for cancellations in Florida.

I added a background/header to my eHarmony profile (roses) and added an intro. It's 95% complete. It seems I can't change the age range of my matches again, but that's okay. It's from 49 to 77.

I finally found out how to change the age range. I changed it from 44 to 72.

I put a filter on their interests. I narrowed it down and instead of hundreds it is just 50 people. I filtered out everyone who lists fishing. The website has been improved.
