The "menacing look" is actually just a natural feature of their face. I've never seen a soft-faced Congoid ever. Capoids are capable of it; they look a great deal more capable of feeling, but the Congoid race as a whole has the appearance of brutish apes.

During the Jim Crow period. If a person had 1/16 Black African ancestry, they were listed as "Black" in the US Census. To be White in the US in that period meant to be fully European in ancestry. Any American with visible Black African admixture or heritage were put into the Black endogamous group.

Most important African American leaders in the early 20th Century were of the Mullato Elite, and were Quadroons phenotypically. These "White" looking Black Americans have died off and mixed into the general Black American population.

Not many of them look THAT white though and they are an absolute minority. I question Walter White's claimed ethnicity. Nobody's ever found his black ancestors. I've sometimes wondered if he was of another ethnicity (Jewish?) and decided to try to pass as black to promote a certain political agenda within the black movement.
