Scary that the pharmaceutical companies are having a heck of a ball over here! Shouldn't we be agriculturally, well...better?

We are in the order of millions, yet pharmaceutics are triple as much!

I suppose a lot of agricultural produce is consumed within the countries it it grown. I know that's the case in Britain anyway.
Being as agriculturally self-sufficient as possible is always good. Crops are the most basic and vital natural resource.

You know I was thinking the other day:

A way to remain self-sustainable for these 4-5 hellish years to come. Let go of Crete. Exactly. Letting it go independent like Malta or something, and subsidize its commodities exclusively for Greece. This could apply for some of the islands abundant in goods, which are enough.

Did you know that Ikaria and Samos were the number one producers of red grapes in tons in the Balkans - a-l-o-n-e?

But over here our politicians it seems have taken up the practical sport instead!

That's exactly what I was looking for, Albion. Thank you very much.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Independent Crete? Why? Can't Greece just make it easier for its own farmers to sell directly to the Greek people with co-operatives and cutting out the middle men?
And you already have an independent Greek island - Cyprus - what happened to enosis?

I think every country needs to focus on building their own agriculture up, because food prices are only going to rise with the rest of the world breeding so much.
Nations need to be self sufficient in the very basic things for life - staple crops, water and energy. Greece could achieve these by the following:

    • Staple crops - It has a long growing season and has a good climate for lots of different crops. Maximise production of staple crops such as wheat and plant rocky areas with permanent crops such as grape vines, olives and chestnuts. Encourage small growers to produce non-staple crops such as tomatoes and start campaigns encouraging people to grow their own crops and provide free allotments to apartment dwellers.
    • Water - Encourage rainwater storage to water gardens and household vegetable patches, support drip irrigation systems and transfer water from wetter areas if needed.
    • Energy - subsidise solar panels and run power stations on gas, coal and methane from waste treatment plants.

Not sure what you'd do about jobs though.

Greece could perhaps start growing hemp on a industrial scale as a new industry. It would probably grow year-round in the Med. See this:
