You can see how eastern europe got even richer than spain or portugal which dident participate in ww2 while on the other hand the east was completely destroyed after ww2 and they got no marshal plan from america.

Both Portugal and Spain were under dictatorship during most of the XX century. Portugal also had 13 years of colonial war in Africa.

As for the Marshall Plan, Spain didn't get it, and we pratically didn't get it either:

Yes you could see their society accomplished more. And they were never as high as in Manhattan but they were higher than most other countries projects. In general communism could easily accomplish big projects.
