I'm obsessed with this song lately.

The lyrics are genius. The band writes the lyrics so that they could have two interpretations. One that the singer is a delusional schizophrenic who has committed suicide and is depressed, the other that he has been abducted by aliens, or the "spaceman"

For example, the opening lyrics are:
It started with a low light
This could be either the light from the alien spaceship entering his window, or a paramedic entering his dark depressed room with a flashlight to try and save his life after a suicide attempt
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
This could be either the alien abduction from his bed or it could me a paramedic taking him out of his bed to get him to the hospital
And then they took my blood type
Again, is this the aliens taking his blood to see what species he is and to research humans, or is it a doctor at a hospital taking a blood sample to see what type of blood transfusion he needs to keep him alive after his suicide attempt. (Gunshot wound, knife blood loss ect
It left a strange impression in my head
A glimpse of strange looking aliens would leave a strange impression in one's head, so would a paramedic frantically rushing in your room to get you to hospital after you are minutes away from death
You know that I was hoping That I could leave this star-crossed world behind
Leave it behind how exactly? By aliens taking him away to their home planet, or by committing suicide never to walk the earth again.
But when they cut me open I guess that changed my mind
This could be referring to him changing his mind once he realises the aliens aren't friendly and want to use him for experimentation OR it could just as well be referring to a surgeon cutting him open at the hospital in an attempt to save his life and the regret he feels from harming himself
