I glommed onto Solti as a kid. He was brutal and unflinching in the fast movements and transcendental in the slow movements. That is what spoke to my temperament. I do know why it doesn't speak to everybody's.
Solti came to Shostakovich late and only recorded a handful of things by Shosty.
Shosty was dying when he composed his last symphony.
Shosty goes "there" and Solti at the end of his life drives it there as well.

A disc of English songs sung by Welsh bass/baritone Bryn Terfel.
Classical songs should be listened to no differently than popular songs. A translation of the texts might be in order when it isn't sung in English, but I've listened to enough German and French popular songs to know understanding the lyrics is a vital part of understanding a song.
