they ultimately came from the Steppe in Ukraine, through Danube valley (Ukraine > Romania/Bulgaria > Serbia/Hungary/Slovakia > wherefrom Italics went South to Italy while Celts went North to the mountains, West into future Germanic territory and also South after the Italics (northern Italy was Celtic in early Roman times, and the Alps as well).
along the way the initial Indo-European Italics must have mixed with the local EEF-rich (Sardinian-like) peoples of the Neolithic cultures of the Northern Balkans and Eastcentral Europe mostly centered around Romania and Hungary, so at the time they entered Italy they probably were much more EEF than their Ukrainian Steppe ancestors
