Canine freestyle. When I first saw this video, I got tears in my eyes. Then I got inspired to practise this with my now deceased dog. It was a fun addition to the obedience training I did with her, and she loved both with the joyful manner that was so typical of her. Our instructor once said that she should videotape us as an example of how heeling can be fun and how much a dog can love doing it.

Oh wow I hadn't seen the above yet Oss. Niiiice! :)

Here's a wee passage I came across when reading some William James a few nights ago. It just put a smile on my face. Taken from the aptly titled essay, On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings:

Take our dogs and ourselves, connected as we are by a tie more intimate than most ties in this world; and yet, outside of that tie of friendly fondness, how insensible, each of us, to all that makes life significant for the other! we to the rapture of bones under hedges, or smells of trees and lamp-posts, they to the delights of literature and art. As you sit reading the most moving romance you ever fell upon, what sort of a judge is your fox-terrier on your behavior? With all his good will toward you, the nature of your conduct is absolutely excluded from his comprehension. To sit there like a statue, when you might be taking him to walk and throwing sticks for his to catch! What queer disease is this that comes over you every day, of holding things and staring at them like that for hours together, paralysed of motion and vacant of all conscious life?

;) Indeed! And the same can be said of our computers too! :D

Good question.

Good answer:
Cat people are obsessive about their appreciation. Dog people are normal rounded human beings with lots of other interests too. ;)

Yes, its proportions are kind of messed up. :D

Västgötaspets can be used for many things. It was used to guarding chickens at my great grandparents' farm. My grandparents also had one when I was a little kiddo, and it was friendly, intelligent and calm. So it's a good breed, even though they look a bit funny.

The Karakachan is a breed of dog that originated in Bulgaria as a mountain livestock guardian dog. Other names are Karakachan Shepherd and Thracian Mollos. The dog is named after the Karakachans, Balkan nomadic shepherds. Due to their conservative stock-breeding traditions, they have preserved some of the oldest breeds of domestic animals in Europe: the Karakachan sheep, Karakachan horse and the Karakachan dog.

In the past, this Mountain dog was widely used in Bulgaria as a border army watchdog. Nowadays it is used primarily as a livestock guardian dog and property guard dog. The most numerous populations of working purebred livestock guarding Karakachan dogs are found in Bulgaria and the United States. The Karakachan was officially approved as a Bulgarian old native breed in 2005. The Karakachan dog may be a descendant of ancient Balkan domestic dogs, possibly since the time of the Thracians. In ancient Thracian treasures, figures were found of big, longhaired guardian dogs with curled tails. The Karachan is part of the origin of the Bulgarian Shepherd dog, with which it should not be confused.

My "nephew" (brother's dog) is a white lab named Joey, who gets a bribe of a pork bone every now and then to keep him away when I visit. I don't have a pic but I'll post a generic pic of a white lab.

The four legged nephew got a pork bone today and loved it so much he actually ate the damn thing. He spent most of the day running around the back yard of my brother's house.

My little German Shepard after her Cruciate ligament operation. She is so sad, she cant run after the monkeys in the garden for a while.

Aaaaww! I just had the same thing done to my youngest dog so I know how difficult it is. He's only allowed to walk on it but not run or jump. My guy is a terrier (pitbull, amstaff) with more energy than any other dog I've ever met, so you can just imagine how difficult it is to keep him from moving around too much..

It's been a month since the surgery now, so we have about 5 months left of rehab. :....

Mine dog got 2 weeks of rest before she can use her leg again. She would go insane if she would have to sit still for 6 months. We got her as a rescue puppy and we are not 100% sure what she is but she is definitely part Belgian Shepard and has the energy to match.

Good luck with rehabilitating your terrier. :)

Dogs really do feel what you feel - animals nuzzle and lick people when they think they are crying

For dog lovers, the idea that man's best friend can feel our pain is not in doubt - and now research is lending weight to the idea.

Dogs nuzzle and lick humans they think are in distress - behaving in a submissive manner designed to offer comfort.

Eighteen pet dogs were tested with their owner - and then strangers - talking, pretending to cry, or humming.

Far more dogs come up and touch people when they think they are crying.

“Military working dog Rex (E168) passed away this morning. He was 11 years old (April 2001-December 2012). Rest in peace Rex and thank you for your service and sacrifice. Once a Marine, Always a Marine… Semper Fi.”

When I see human-on-human violence I actually think that if if I had the ability to do so, I'd let it go on forever... you're guilty for being born, basically. Seeing a dog get shot would affect me much more than seeing a 10 year old boy get shot :(

Same here, I don't give a shit about humans, but dogs... man, they are like the most evolved empathic creatures on earth.

Louis-Ferdinand Céline and the Death of Bessy (http://beingsakin.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/bessy/)

http://beingsakin.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/celine-bebert-bessy-danemark.jpg?w=584&h=879 (http://beingsakin.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/celine-bebert-bessy-danemark.jpg)

The head is like a factory that doesn’t run exactly the way you’d like…imagine…two thousand billion neurons…all a complete mystery…where does that get you?…neurons left to their own resources! the slightest attack, your head goes haywire, you can’t pin down a single idea…you’re ashamed of yourself…Here on my ass like this, I’d like to tell you some more…about pictures, coats-of-arms, secret passageways, draperies…but I’m lost…I can’t find anything…my head’s turning…yes, but wait…I’ll get back to you…and my Castle…and my head!…later…later…I remember a word!…animal instinct, I said…Bébert…I’ve got the thread back…[our cat] Bébert was at home in that Castle from the top of the turrets to the cellars…he and Lili would meet in one corridor or another…they didn’t talk to each other…they behaved as if they’d never seen each other before…each for himself…the animal waves are like that, a quarter of a millimeter off and you’re not yourself…you don’t exist…a different world!…same mystery with Bessy, my dog, later in the woods in Denmark…she’d run away…I’d call her…blue in the face…she didn’t hear me…off on a binge…she’d pass, she’d brush against us…ten times!…twenty times!…like an arrow!…and away she’d go around the trees so fast you couldn’t see her legs! bat out of hell!…I loved that dog…and I think she loved me too…but her animal life came first…for two, three hours…I didn’t count…this was one of her escapades…wild in the animal world…woods, meadows, rabbits, deer, ducks…she came back with bleeding paws, affectionate…she died here in Meudon, she’s buried over there, right next to the house, in the garden, I can see the mound…a painful death…cancer, I think…she wanted to die there outside…I held her head…I held her in my arms up to the end…really a splendid animal…a joy to look at her…a vibrant joy…she was so beautiful!…not a flaw…coat, build, stance…nothing like it in the dog shows!

It’s a fact, I still think of her, even now in this fever…in the first place, I can’t tear myself away from anything, a memory, a person, so how would I tear myself away from a dog?…I’m a virtuoso of fidelity…fidelity and responsibility…responsible for everything…a disease…anti-ungrateful…the world is good to you!…animals are innocent, even when they run wild like Bessy…in a pack they shoot them…

I really loved her with her crazy escapades, I wouldn’t have parted with her for all the gold in the world…any more than with Bébert, though he was the meanest ripper of them all…a tiger!…but very affectionate at times…and terribly attached! from end to end in Germany…animal fidelity…

In Meudon, I could see, Bessy missed Denmark…nothing to hunt in Meudon…no deer…maybe a rabbit?…maybe…I took her to the Bois de Saint-Cloud…for a bit of a run…she sniffed…zigzagged…and came back in no time…two minutes…nothing to track in the Bois de Saint-Cloud…she walked along with us…but she was sad…she was a robust animal…she’d had a bad time of it up there…the cold…ten below…and no kennel…and not just for days!…for months…years…the Baltic frozen over…

All of a sudden up there with us…never mind, we forgave her everything…she’d take a powder…she’d come back…never a word of reproach…she ate out of our plates, so to speak…the worse the world treated us, the more we spoiled her…she’s dead…but she had a bad time dying…I didn’t want to give her an injection…not even a little morphine…the syringe would have frightened her…I’d never frightened her…she was very low for a good two weeks…oh, she didn’t complain, but I could tell…strength all gone…she slept beside my bed…one morning she wanted to go out…I wanted to lay her down in the straw…right after daybreak…she didn’t like the place I put her…she wanted a different place…on the cold side of the house, on the pebbles…she lay down very prettily…she began to rattle…that was the end…they’d told me, I didn’t believe it…but it was true…she was pointed in the direction of her memory…the place she had come from, the North, Denmark, her muzzle turned toward the north…a faithful dog in a way, faithful to the woods of her escapades, Korsör up there…faithful too to the awful life…she didn’t care for the woods of Meudon…she died with two, three little rattles…oh, very discreet…practically no complaining…and in a beautiful position, as though in mid-leap…but on her side, felled, finished…her nose toward the forests of the chase, up there where she came from, where she’d suffered…God knows!…

Oh, I’ve seen plenty of death agonies…here…there…everywhere…but none by far so beautiful, so discreet…so faithful…the trouble with men’s death agonies is the song and dance…a man is always on the stage…even the simplest of them…

Two indigenous Bosnia dogs:

The Tornjak is a mountain sheep dog native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. FCI #355 as Bosnian-Croatian sheep dog Tornjak.
Tornjaks are large and powerful dogs, with well proportioned, almost square-bodied features and agile movements.

The Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound or Bosanski Oštrodlaki Gonič, also called the Barak, is a hunting dog breed developed in Bosnia. The breed is a scenthound, originally used to hunt large game.
The former name given to the breed was Illyrian Hound, referring to a pre-Slavic people of the area.

Title: Pep the Dog Mugshot

Photographer: Artist rendering of Pep the Dog based on an archival photo.

http://www.easternstate.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/esp_library_preview/library/PH16.jpg

Pep "The Cat-Murdering Dog" was a black Labrador Retriever admitted to Eastern State Penitentiary on August 12, 1924. Prison folklore tells us that Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot used his executive powers to sentence Pep to Life Without Parole for killing his wife’s cherished cat.

Prison records support this story: Pep’s inmate number (C-2559) is skipped in prison intake logs and inmate records. The Governor told a different story. He said Pep had been sent to Eastern to act as a mascot for the prisoners. He and the Warden, Herbert “Hard-Boiled” Smith, were friends.

Pep was much loved, and lived among the inmates at Eastern State for about a decade. While the truth may never be known, in photographs Pep—with his head down and ears back--looks GUILTY.

Huskies

I love Siberian huskies with their piercing ice-blue eyes for them to see in the cold atmosphere of the northern hemisphere on this planet, and the way they howl like wolves. I think they'd be uncomfortably hot if they're taken out of their naturally cold environment from which they've adapted their features and thick warm coats for them to survive in their natural environment.
Huskies love to play in the snow.
I love this beautiful husky video so much (music is by dark-electro music pioneer and legend Gary Numan: "I Don't Believe In The Angel Wars") showing huskies catching birds and saving some men who've fallen into ice.
It shows the close rapport and relationship between dogs and man.
Wolves are wild and free dogs, far more ancient than humans, and dogs are said to have descended from wolves.

Beautiful Japanese Chin :love0031:

Here is a little dog that has it all - it is easy to care for, lovely to look at, and has even had Royal patronage - Queen Alexandra owned 261 of them!

The Japanese Chin is one of the most ancient of breeds and its exact history is difficult to determine, but ancestors can be traced back to China or Korea more than 1100 years ago.

In Japan there were two distinct size/types of Chins and they were bred separately and exclusively for centuries in noble households, and were so highly regarded that no ‘commoner’ could possess one.

The Japanese Chin (Japanese: 狆, chin), is a regal dog known for its importance to Japanese nobility since the aristocracy kept these dogs in their palaces.

A lap dog and companion dog, this toy breed has a distinctive heritage.

Japanese Chins have silky-soft fur and cute faces. They have white corners to their eyes giving them an almost human-like quality, particularly when they look to the side and the highly desired white corners are visible in their eyes.

(The film character of Gizmo in Gremlins was inspired by the face on a Japanese Chin dog after the film producer was left so impressed by a Japanese Chin dog he met whilst having dinner with friends). Japanese Chins are said by experts to be an excellent choice of dogs for first-time dog owners and are great companion dogs. They're very quiet (so ideal for apartments too), well-behaved and affectionate dogs who love human company and short daily walks. Their silky coats are simple to look after and only require grooming once or twice a week.

"While most believe that the source breed for the Japanese Chin originated in China, the route by which the Chin arrived in Japan is a widely debated topic.
One story claims that the dogs were given to the Japanese royalty in 732 A.D. as gifts from the rulers of Korea.

Others maintain that they were given as gifts to the Empress of Japan as early as the mid-6th Century to 7th Century.

In Japan, dogs are usually viewed as working or helper animals. The Japanese Chin is distinct from these in that they are owned strictly for the purpose of companionship.
The distinct appearance and personality of the Japanese Chin eventually captured the hearts of Japanese Royalty and resulted in ownership being restricted to those of royal and noble blood.

Each noble house bred to their own standards. Because of this, there are many variations of the Japanese Chin from size to coat density, eye set, personality, body type, etc.

Though there is some documentation that indicates Portuguese sailors introduced the breed to Europe in the 17th Century by presenting some to Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort to King Charles II of England, there is more credible evidence that the first Japanese Chin were given as gifts by the Emperor of Japan to an American naval officer, Matthew Calbraith Perry, when Perry visited the Orient in 1853 to open trade with the East.

Perry was given a total of seven Japanese Chin but only two survived the passage back to the USA. It is disputed whether Perry gave the two to Franklin Pierce, President of the United States, James Stirling, Rear admiral of the Royal Navy
to take to Queen Victoria, or his daughter, Caroline Slidell, after returning from Japan."

Adult Japanese Chin Height, Length and Weight.
Japanese Chin stand about 20 to 27cm (8 to 11 inches) in height at the withers.
Weight can vary from a low of 1.4 kg (3 lb) to a high of 6.8 kg (15 lb), with an average of 3.2 to 4.1 kg (7 to 9 lb) being the most common.
Its distinctive expression is characterized by a large broad head, large wide-set eyes, short broad muzzle, ear feathering, and evenly patterned facial markings.

Coat and Colour.
Japanese Chin are very cat-like in both appearance and traits

The coat is low maintenance, long, and smooth to the touch. The coat of a Japanese Chin is either black and white or red and white in colour.
The colours of their coats can vary in intensity (lemon and white, mahogany and white, etc.)

Temperament.
This breed is considered one of the most cat-like of the dog breeds in attitude: it is alert, intelligent, and independent, and it uses its paws to wash and wipe its face. Other cat-like traits include their preference for resting on high surfaces, their good sense of balance, and their tendency to hide in unexpected places.

A companion dog, the Japanese Chin is loving and loyal to its owner and typically happy to see others, though a few are distrustful of strangers. While Japanese Chin prefer familiar surroundings, they also do quite well in new situations. This, combined with their love of people, make them good therapy dogs.

Very early socialization of Japanese Chin puppies leads to a more emotionally well-balanced Chin that is more accepting of different situations and people.

Japanese Chin are usually very quiet, but will bark to alert a household to the arrival of a visitor or something out of the ordinary.

Japanese Chin were bred for the purpose of loving and entertaining their owners. While typically calm, they are well known for performing many tricks such as the "Chin Spin", in which they turn around in rapid circles; dancing on their hind legs while pawing their front feet, clasped together, in the air; and some even "sing", a noise that can range from a low trill to a higher, almost operatic quality noise, which sounds much like "woooo".

Papillon Dogs aka 'The Butterfly Dog'.

'Papillon' is French for 'butterfly' and this little and cute toy-dog gets its name from its elegant fine sprays of hair around its ears and its high-arched tail of sprayed long hair.
Papillons are one of the oldest dog breeds and were very popular with French painters, royalty, and the aristocracy of France, including Marie Antoinette who called her dog 'le petite papillon' (the small butterfly).
They're also sometimes used as sniffer dogs in helping to find lost children (who may be frightened by larger dogs). Papillons have a lot of high energy for a small dog. Their coat is long, luxurious and very silky, and always multi-coloured white;- white with other shades blending through it. They have few health problems and can live to approximately sixteen years with good care, they're very easy to groom, are easily trained, but care should be taken with them around small children.

Pomeranians aka 'The Pom'

Michelangelo painted the sistine chapel with a pomeranian by his side. The pomeranian is one of only three canines to survive during the sinking of the Titanic.
Poms originally weighed a massive 30lb and they were all white, but todays tiny poms weigh an average of just 4-6lb and this was caused by Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Empress of the British Empire, who loved pomeranians and down-sized them. Queen Victoria established her own kennels in the late 1800s and imported small pomeranians of all colours and created her own perfect small lapdog. Poms can now be seen in both snow-white and golden-beige fur shades.

The 21st century minute pommie dog is actually a descendant from sledge dogs from Iceland and Lapland. It's ancestors also include the Alaskan Malamute, the Samoyed and the Siberian Husky (see the video posted below).

The Pom's have cute little faces and big plush balls of fur which consists of an abundant double-coat layering which requires daily grooming to avoid tangling and matting due to heavy shedding. Their small triangular-shaped ears contribute to their fox-like appearance, whilst their tail is heavily feathered and set high above its back. Poms have a lot of big-dog personality in a small dog size and are versatile with their homes. They're energetic, intelligent but head-strong, bark excessively and require a lot of pampering and early training. They have an average lifespan of 12-15 years.

Shih Tzu

A shih tzu is a toy dog breed weighing 5–7.25 kilograms (11.0–16.0 lb) with long silky hair. The breed originated in China. The name is both singular and plural.
Shih Tzus date back to over 2000 years in Tibet and were created by combining a small Pekingese dog with a long-haired Lhasa Apso dog et voila! a Shih Tzu was created.

The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy little dog with a short muzzle and large dark eyes. With a soft and long double coat, it stands no more than 26.7 cm (101⁄2 in.) at the withers and with an ideal weight of 4.5 to 7.3 kg (10 to 16 lbs). Drop ears are covered with long fur, and the heavily furred tail is carried curled over the back. The coat may be of any colour, though white and with blazes of white are frequently seen. The long fur on a Shih Tzu can be multiple colours.
Ribbons and bows are used to keep its long hair out of their eyes.

Pekingese

The Pekingese was another one of the toy-dogs to survive the sinking of the Titanic.
These little dogs love being petted non-stop on peoples laps and are often demanding and stubborn in their temperaments.
It's an ancient dog that only royal people could own.
Ordinary people had to bow down to these dogs in ancient times. If anyone harmed a Pekingese they would be put to death.
These fearless and courageous little dogs served as guards to Chinese Emperors.
Pekingese require a lot of daily grooming and often have health problems.
Training is said to be difficult and they're not the best dog to get along with children as they like to be the centre of attention.
(More information is in the video below).

Japanese Spitz

The beautiful Japanese Spitz is a small to medium breed of dog of the Spitz type. The Japanese Spitz is a companion dog and pet. There are varying standards around the world as to the ideal size of the breed, but they are always larger than their smaller cousins, the Pomeranian. They were developed in Japan in the 1920s and 30s by breeding a number of other Spitz type dog breeds together.

They are recognised by the vast majority of the major kennel clubs, except the American Kennel Club due to it being similar appearance to the white Pomeranian dog, American Eskimo Dog and Samoyed Dog. While they are a relatively new breed, they are becoming widely popular due to their favorable temperament and other features.

The major health concern is patellar luxation, and a minor recurring concern is that the breed can be prone to runny eyes. They can act as reliable watchdogs, but are a type of companion dog and prefer to be an active part of the family. Although they might appear fluffy, they are a low maintenance breed as the coat has a nonstick texture often compared to teflon. Their heads are shaped like foxes, whilst their tales spray elegantly in an arch across their backs and they have beautiful layers of fur around their necks.

A beautiful Japanese Spitz meets a similar looking (but much larger) beautiful Samoyed* dog.
(Despite their differences in size, the large Samoyed dog (which resembles a polar bear)
is more friendly and docile towards the much smaller and more defensive Japanese Spitz.
(Maybe because it doesn't feel threatened by the smaller dog).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZnVVCZcB2w

*Samoyeds are especially beautiful yet built like little tanks.
Friendly and gentle enough to be utilised as children-warmers on cold nights,
they are brave enough to stand up to polar bears in defence of their people.

While on exercise this morning (Sunday 31 August), volunteers from Minehead's RNLI on board the Atlantic 85 spotted a dog stranded on at the base of some of England's highest sea cliffs, just below Foreland Light House. The D class was launched and the dog was safely extracted from the cliffs. The dog 'Sprigg' who has been missing since the 22 August was reunited with its delighted owner yesterday.

My maternal uncle is a 6 foot 2 inch tall policeman and he keeps 3 German-Shepherd police dogs in his house in the City of Bath. His wife works for the RSPCA and is a professional dog-trainer. Their German Shepherd police dogs are so well-behaved. A dogs sense of smell is thousands of times more capable and better than human creatures noses, so dogs can easily sniff out tiny traces of blood, bombs, drugs, corpses, etc, even in areas the sizes of large fields. Criminals stand no chance of hiding anything once the police dogs are brought in.

My Irish friend in London keeps a gorgeous golden coloured dog which is a cross between a collie and a sheepdog. Everywhere she goes she gets loads of complements on her looks and good behaviour. She doesn't need to be told to sit at road crossings, she can run around off her leash, she likes to behave like a fox at night and walk like a fox on the walls. She's so clever, even on the London tubes, she knows which stop to get off and stands up by herself automatically without being told.

I find muslims always seem terrified of my friends dog, despite how well-behaved and graceful she is. Me and my Irish friend find it pathetic that so many black people and muslims move out of our way in the streets and look scared and act terrified of my friends beautiful and gentle dog on public transport all the time, because loads of white English people give her endless complements and she's beautiful, very clean, obedient, intelligent, always runs up happily to greet me, loves her owner and is protective of him (she'd only bite if someone attacked her owner) and she is so well-behaved and an intuitive dog.

Beautiful husky dogs. They've adapted and evolved with thick warm coats and pale blue eye
to help them survive in their cold climate. Their DNA is not related to wolves.
They howl like wolves to be heard above the high wind pitches from the natural climate they stem from.
They love to play in the snow. I feel sad when humans take huskies away from their natural environment for their own selfish reasons to keep as pets in countries with climates that are different to their native Siberia,
as huskies aren't suited to hot climates with their thick coats and could overheat, plus there's no snow for them to play with.

Dog's 'sixth sense saved' friends from Newquay landslide

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/80815000/jpg/_80815093_80815092.jpg

Two friends who were a few feet away from a landslide say their pet dog's "sixth sense" saved their lives.

Amy Jones and Matt Smith were sitting above Great Western Beach in Newquay when their collie "sensed" danger and ran off, with the friends following.

Seconds later about 100 tonnes of debris fell from the cliff on to the access road.

Science dates old dogs with new tricks

http://cdn.phys.org/newman/gfx/news/2015/sciencedates.jpg

Man's best friend has not been around for nearly as long as thought, according to a study Thursday that brings the emergence of modern dogs forward by some 15,000 years.

The finding follows the reclassification of two fossil skulls, one more than 30,000 years old, that were the basis for dating dog domestication to a long-gone era when early humans were still roaming hunter-gatherers.
