Well I never played it all. Upon this thread I went to wikipedia which had disputes on the origins so I'm guessing they made up their own character loosely inspired by Serbians.

One of them (Niko Bellic) was a teenage soldier during the Bosnian War also, leaving him a bitter man in search of two men who set him up and left him and his men to die.
