I open this thread since I'm partially descendent from them. Palermo and especially Messina were by the most important portual cities in south Europe and in all the Mediterranean sea, since their interesting position.
In 1784 Ferdinando III of Sicily and IV of Napoli (the same king for two parallel kingdoms a bit funny) invited many merchant from all Europe to move to Messina and Palermo to invest in the city after the earthquake in Messina of 1783.
