They easily could. The population outside of Italy most similar looking to southernmost Italians is Ashkenazi Jews. Iberians have too much Western European influence, Greeks too much Balkan and minor Balto-Slavic which makes some of them really stand out in Sicily.

I lived among jews most of my life. They dont look like southern italians at all. They look like a mix of eastern euros, west asians, brits and what have you but not italians.

Adding Slavic genes to Apulia will just make them look more continental Greek, since before that they would just look like Sicilians.
