Exactly, some Italian American woman told me I was a WASP and I don't think she was lying. I wast told my ancestry is English, Irish and German but that mix can easily be English akin to the smelting of Saxon and Celt in middle England. I would be absurd to claim Irish or German ancestry as the sum is greater than it's parts but I have an Irish name.

I guess I would be Briton derived English or British too although I guess it's possible I am a WASP in Scottish sort of way it's hard to know since I am in New York not Britain.

I know this is over a decade ago, but the reason why Americans of English ancestry has dropped is because more Americans of British ancestry just started claiming to have "American ancestry". Also, the census use to count lots of people who had any form of ancestry as being part of that ethnic group. Then in recent years, the numbers have shifted as more the census just listed people of "self identified" origin. Look at how the numbers in people of English and Scots-Irish ancestry have changed drastically. People of Scots-Irish origin went form 27M estimated in 2004 to just 3M in 2017:

Are you really shocked at people's ignorance? I've seen many who think that a WASP is automatically associated with any kind of British ancestry. And many Americans of British Isles background have started to identity as having "American ancestry".

I wouldn't put too much stock in the labels people perceive you as. Especially in America. If I had an Israeli passport, I'd be Asian because Israel is part of Asia. But according to American standards, I "can't" call myself "Asian American", only Orientals can.
