Van Jones on 'Shitholes': Melania Trump's Country Slovenia "Not Exactly The Jewel Of Europe"
ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: Van Jones, I mean should this come as a surprise to people?

VAN JONES, CNN: Well, I mean it's not only racist, it's only just inaccurate. Numbers are sometimes better. 33% of Americans have college degrees. God bless everybody, it's a lot of hard work, now they have student debt. 43% of African immigrants have college degrees, okay? 11% of white people in America have a graduate people. One-quarter, 25% of Nigerian Americans have a graduate degree. So what is he talking about?

Part of the thing is that when you're relying on just horrible stereotypes -- by the way, Melania Trump, our first lady who I admire greatly, is from Slovenia, not exactly the jewel of Europe. Slovenia. But she's welcome here and Nigerians are not. There's something wrong with the way this president is proceeding.

I don't think anybody here on this panel can defend these kind of comments. If you want to have a conversation about immigration policy, you can have it without insulting whole continents and whole countries, especially when you have African immigrants coming to this country, making America better every day and being disrespected by this president.

Slovenia is actually doing pretty well for an ex-communist country. It only has a high corruption. However, it doesn't compare to Nigeria and especially not to Haiti.

Actually that guy is an uneducated moron, Slovenia is a super picturesque and clean Alpine country, that's why it lives a lot out of tourism.

Leaving aside that ignoramous' assessment and GDP-sperging which is about to come in the posts, it should be noted that Slovenes are basically Croats 2.0, a further step in evolution of millennially-long horseshit shoveling for Krauts.

I remember that one buddy (when we were messing about just trying to find ethnic insults) he was all about how shitty and fucked up Romania is. When I said that his country (Sri Lanka) is much worse, he literally responded "Yeah, but it's not in Europe so you can't compare, all European countries are better than most non-Euro countries" and that holds true basically. Slovenia might be a poor country compared to Denmark or Switzerland, however compared to the countries Trump alluded to being a "shithole" it is a paradise.
Another thing to note is how Slovenia somehow managed to keep it's allure and flavor in spite of being communist. Romania certainly did not and it's quite sad as it was a lot more beautiful pre WW1 than after WW2 and today.

Leaving aside that ignoramous' assessment and GDP-sperging which is about to come in the posts, it should be noted that Slovenes are basically Croats 2.0, a further step in evolution of millennially-long horseshit shoveling for Krauts.
I've noticed that basically all slavo-magyars that claim central Europe has a sort of a Stockholm syndrome type of relationship with Austrians/ Germans. I also see no reason for why using GDP per capita is not a reasonable measure of living standards. It's not perfect, but it is one of the best. Usually living standards and GDP per capita show a reasonably strong correlation.

This guy reminds me of Fractal with the same inability to understand simple concepts. That 43% of self selected African immigrants have university degrees doesn't mean Africa's population is full of highly competent people. What it ironically means is competent people leave shitholes for green pastures and if that greener pasture is on the other side of the world the less competent won't be able to get there. It's, um, far harder to make it to the US on boat from Africa than Europe. There is something called 'the Atlantic Ocean' between Africa and the US. Their better off countrymen can afford a plane ticket.

It makes me wonder if people like the author actually think what they say through or is winning 'liberal points' with like minded readers all that matters?

Actually, Tennessee (especially Jacksonville) has a significantly higher GDP per capita than Slovenia.

If Germany or the UK were to join the US, they would be among the poorest states. The Scandinavian countries are the only ones that would have a GDP per capita near the American average with Norway being the only one to significantly surpass the average US GDP per capita. A lot of people underestimate how good the US is.

Well, to be fair, the US immigration system is quite selective so even the immigrants who are from "shithole" countries tend to be of the educated elite. That's why the US rarely has issues with legal immigrants.

Well, I remember few years ago "all" Americans (include an American politician) wanted to bombard Czech R because CNN and other media mistook CzR for Chechnya.
I have no illusion about their knowledge about Europe/world. But I don't know why are you surprised by that claiming because most WE people would be able to say about Slovenia the same thing.

Still the core of the problem is somewhere else - politicians (no need to mention the US president) shouldn't use expressions of internet haters/fighters, etc. for any country in the world.

It was just a couple of retards on Twitter that wanted to bomb the Czech Republic. Many of them even used the term 'Czechoslovakia' because they didn't know about the split. They were laughed at later. Did an American politician really say that? Seems hard to believe.

Slovenija - naj tebi pesem poje,

ne išči sreče drugod kot le doma.

Povej še oblaček ti bel,

obhodil že ves si svet.

Je lepša dežela še kje,

kot naša kjer sem doma?

Je vetrič veselo zavel,

preletel je prek sveta.

In takih lepot ni našel nikjer,

kot tule, kjer sem doma.

Slovenija - naj tebi pesem poje,

Slovenia, whence thy beauty?

As far as the eye can see,
there is dreamy beauty,
where is a more beautiful world to be found,
is there a place more wondrous than home?

From the mountains I gaze into the distance,
over the hills, the valleys, the mountain peaks,
in the distance, I see the blue sea.
Is there a place more wondrous than home?

CHORUS:
Slovenia, whence thy beauty?
We hail you from our hearts,
and we are happy here where our home is.

Slovenia, this is a song for you,
do not seek happiness anywhere else but at home.

Tell me, white puffy cloud,
you have been around the world;
is there a land more beautiful
than the one where we live?

The wind sang a happy song,
it has blown across the world,
but nowhere has it seen such splendour
as here where my home is.

In Eastern Europe people have to work as hard as the natives. They obviously don't want any of that. :p

It's sad how mainstream people genuinely pretend they don't know whether they prefer to live in Haiti or Norway and even shed crocodile tears over Trump's bigotry, while their tears would have been real ones were they to have been dropped in Haiti and told they live there from now.

And even European politicians saying the people in the video are trash who you shouldn't want coming to your society, which they are, would be making a terrible faux-pas.

The situation isn't that great for Slovenes though. Life isn't cheap (with apartments costing more than in Belgium for example), salaries aren't that huge and Slovene employers have a tendency to hire Bosnians and Serbians over people who have the Slovenian citizenship. Sure it is better than other ex-Yugoslav nations but it didn't have a war and their country was already well developped in Yugoslav times, plus direct proximity with High standards nations helps.

Most African immigrants to the USA will tell you their former country is a chithole, that is why they left. What does getting a college degree have to do with anything? Nobody said a person is chithole anyhow. I know lots of blue collar people who make over 100K, never went to college and I know college grads with 80-100K student loan debt.
