Tall guy on left looks more Arab, like Jordanian or Palestinian. The guy on right looks Assyrian or Kurdish.

Both are atypical for Italy, especially the left guy, IMO.

Wouldn't have guessed them as Italian. They look Turkish, kinda like Köksal Baba

I don't think they fit well in any European country at all. They're even more exotic than most Cypriots.

They look Kurdish, Assyrian, Iranian, north Iraqi.

They are of Calabrese descent. It makes sense such appearances could exist in southern Italy as outlier types. More Calabria/Sicily than Apulia/Campania.

The tall guy looks like Fares Fares, a Swedish Assyrian (nose and head shape):

http://www.blackfilm.com/read/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Zero-Dark-Thirty-Fares-Fares.jpg

He's rather exotic even for Italian standard. The shorter guy can pass as Sicilian if anything, IMO.

Are we sure they are fully Italians? I don't think so...

Look pretty exotic even for the South. They should cut off some beard, i bet they would look different.

they have a Greek-Calabrian surname but not sure they were born in south Italy

They frequently claim to be Italian on the show and would enthusiastically cook Italian cuisine. Look them up. They're called Josh and Nic.

I do agree that they're probably not full Italian. They might have north African heritage as well. Though the short guy may pass as full southern Italian, but I don't know.

They did intrigue me, hence why I made this thread, because they looked rather Levantine even for Italian standards. They can both pass pretty well as Assyrian.

They might be Griko. The Griko are not genetic Greeks -- they are a very bottlenecked, ancient population of southern Italians untouched by foreign admixture for thousands of years.

I don't think they were born in Italy and so with Italian culture, then they can claim whatever they want. Everyone can be Italian even immigrants if they get citizenship.

Classical Italian-Americans.

The left one looks nothing like Italian, or European in general. He is pure armenoid, could pass as Turkish, Armenian, dark Caucasian etc

I have seen SOME people from the west-central part of Sicily with their looks (Palermo area). But it is rare.

Hmm, why not post *both* Italo-Aussie teams from this show?

The other one (Davide Napoli and Marco Risotti):
https://s.yimg.com/ea/img/-/180112/5a5822fdcfb53_812mkr9_group2_davidemarco_colourpor trait.jpg

Also, the team in the OP have the last name Sama, which I don't think is a Griko surname.

The Griko are in their own genetic cluster. They are not part of the Sicilian/Calabrese/Cretan/Dodecanese cluster because they lack Steppe ancestry and even Aegean islanders and Sicily have some.

Does not sound Griko to me.

Griko surnames are often similar to modern Greek surnames and they usually end in -aci or -ace (Versace, Gerace, etc), or are blatantly Greek sounding -- Sinopoli, Scaffidi, Iannopollo.

These two do look Italian though. Nothing special or intriguing about them. They look like standard Italian guys. Lol.

The group I posted on the other hand, just looked atypical and odd even for Italian standards. So they needed a nod.

surnames with accent are usually of Greek origin in southern Italy, maybe not specifically Griko

They don't look European at all (the ones you posted) and as I said even outlying for Cyprus.

I don't think this is always true. But Griko surnames are easily recognizable as I said because they end in -aci, -ace, -opollo and other Greek looking endings.

They are not Dinarids.
Clearly Armenoids and pass much better in Turkey than in the Balkans...

One on left would struggle to fit in Cyprus even as atypical I think. Right is more doable as Cypriot IMO, but still would be rather outlying for anywhere else in Europe. I am suspicious of them being of fully Italian heritage.

I can believe them to be fully southern Italian but they are atypical.

Calabria is the European center of West Asian R1b.

But Armenoid types could have been carried by other haplogroups too. Calabria also has a lot of J2.

Also despite its ancient Greek culture, parts of Calabria are probably the region of southern Italy where the people most closely retain the ancient genetic character of the region.

I didn't say THEY looked European. I said the OTHER two Italians, that someone else posted, looked European.

Anyway, I'd class them as:

1. Assyrid + Taurid
2. East Med + Alpine
