As long as you don't start a fire and your roomie is okay with it, there is really no harm

Because it makes the walls and furniture nasty, and many people will be using that room after you.

Smoking eventually leads to Emphysema, leaving the lungs drowned in mucous, and you literally die from lack of oxygen to the heart...cough.

I used to have to stand outside the dorm to smoke.

But cigarettes aren't nasty
They actually have a pleasant smell, at least to me

Bleh. I would not want to live in your room. Many others would not either.

I smell like cigarettes right now, but it's a pleasant smell.

I would not say I completely dislike the smell of cigarettes. I like a good cigar, but I do not need the smell to linger in my living space. I will pass.

Once you go black, you never go back...

Because you don't own the room. Simply renting someone else's property.
They want to prevent the value going down, which smoking indoors causes. It brings a smell that doesn't leave (and it's not pleasant) and costs the walls and ceiling with tar.

If you have an older dorm room with operable windows I don't see the problem. Or Window hvac units that can suck the smoke out. Then clean the filter often. With the newer dorms some or more like an office building design where the HVAC return sucks in the smoke then that circulates all over the floor or the building, depending on the HVAC design.
