America is full of people who pretend to be Italian and are not, but not only the USA. Last summer in Germany I met a guy in the underground who was very short, very dark skinned, all white dressed, with gel in the hair and big glasses. I and my boyfriend (true Italians) looked at him and started to laugh becouse he was ridicolous but acted like if he were the coolest person on the train. He was racially a Southern American. He would never persuade us Italian that he is Italian but maybe a German sees a guy with Armani glasses and gel and thinks that he is Italian and obviously stereotypes start.

An other false idea is that Italians wear gel in the hair (some do, but a very thin minority). It's true that we wear big sun glasses but for the simple reason that here in summer there's a lot of sun.

Always in Germany I saw many Arabs wearing the Italian national football team t-shirt. Bah...

Mhh it isn't so simply: the american concept of ''italian'' is totally different from our concept...basically, they're mostly of sicilian (except the Situation whose ancestors were neapolitans) + irish/greek/puerto rican heritage. No-one of them have a real connection with southern Italy.

It's much more than that. Being italian-american is just as italian as being italian anywhere in the world including other regions of italy (which didnt exist till recently).

Food, mentality, family, tradition all preserved and passed down. They're a different branch than you or those in the modern state of Italy, but they belong to the same olive tree.

This is why the term "Hispanic" is often an adjective to Brown people, labeled of "Illegal Alien".
Mexicans (for example) are NOT Hispanic, nor illegal aliens.
They are indigenous to the American continent.

The US Census consequently, lumps Spaniards and Mexicans in the same category, just to bury even more the identity of Mexicans as Indigenous people to the Americas, and brainwash them to believe they are descendants of Spanish people (The real Hispanics).
