It is probably from his paternal side since his mother seems to be a spaniard.

I think it is curious, according to wikipedia his father was a doctor and poet, even being a mulatto. I thought blacks and afro-community had no opportunities in Brazil, but I've seen tons of Machado de Assis, Castro Alves, Luís Gama, etc during our history... All slaves descendants and part of aristocracy at the same time :rolleyes:
