He was maternally of Slovak descent, it was reported his mother spoke Hungarian with an accent even when she was old.
His paternal line is more complicated.
At first glance it seems like the surname(Petrovic) is serb/south slavic, however when once checks his surname on forebears.io, it turns out it's found in many countries and it's more common in Slovakia than in Serbia. Petőfi's paternal ancestors were lutherans (not orthodox like serbs) and were originally from Nitra. So it's possible Petőfi was mostly of Slovak descent, not half Serb half Slovak as previously thought. He declared himself as a magyar/hungarian though.
