View Full Version : Pashto-Kurdish similarities
It's kind of amazing that Kurdish and Pashto have so much similarities. Sometimes even the verbs are similar. There is still no solid explanation as to why these 2 languages have so many similarities to the exclusion of Persian. I mean they are sort of geographically seperated by Persian speakers.
I think there is no other explanation that somehow these 2 populations are very connected in the past. Here are some sentences/words. I'll be adding to this later. Feel free to comment.

Nice! What beautiful languages :o I wish Turkey recognized Kurdish and other minority languages as officially "minority languages" and open schools in those languages in provinces where those languages are frequently spoken. So people wouldn't be assimilated there wouldn't be any minority problems in Turkey.
*NOTE: I'm not supporting seperation! I'm just supporting the freedom of using minority languages and cultures. Also I don't want those languages to die! Please don't take it as "separatism"! Thank you...

Indeed. Diversity in languages, cultures and even phenotypes makes for a more interesting world. Sadly it looks like diversity in all those areas will decline with time.

I agree. Turkish goverment must do something to stop declining of those beautiful languages and cultures. But unfortunately we have many brainless so called "Turks" here. They call speaking different languages other than Turkish as "separatism". What does that have to do with separatism? Even there was a language census at 60s' Turkey. Unfortunately the grandchildren of people with that mindset lived at 80s' pro-coup Turkey still lives here... and this pro-coup mindset says there's no such a thing as Kurdish. So cringe!
Also 75% of my close friends are Kurdish but none of them knows Kurdish or know a bit. If I was the president of Turkey, I'd open schools in minority languages in where the minority languages are spoken frequently (such as Kurdish schools in Diyarbakır or Laz schools in Rize) and also a "protecting Turkey's languages & cultures ministry", but such things are impossible...

About 20-30% of the nouns i wrote are as close to pashto in persian also, but i’m talking about the 70-80% kurdish words and verbs i wrote that are much closer pashto-kurdish than pashto-persian

Could be. Also I don’t understand many of the words spoken by kurmanjis from turkey. It’s interesting that i can understand about 70-80% of turkey kurmanjis and also kurds from khorasan iran

Behdini is spoken in areas of Hakkari, Van, Sirnex and Wirme.
Also I wonder where did you learn Pashto?

Would have been nice if more turks think like you. Seperatism idea is probably why they call kurds mountain turks in turkey. No matter what happens to kurdish in turkey its not going anywhere in iraq or iran in the near future

Iraqi PM just announced the removal of Kurdish language from official documents. It's another attack on our language.

Ok i’ll try to listen to behdini from those areas and see if i can understand more than 80%.

They're proving time and time again that the only solution for us is a separate state. That way we can fully protect our language and our culture.
But honestly it looks like Iraq, Iran and Turkey are planning to destroy the autonomy that we currently have. All the recent attacks which show Iraqi-Turkish-Iranian cooperation comes after unity talks between Kurdish parties. They want us to stay divided.

Weird how those phrases are almost mutually intelligible in Persian but the language itself isn't, it has to be a grammar thing I guess

Trying to remove kurdish from official documents is one thing but if they’re smart which i think they are they’ll never do actual war with kurds because they know based on our history it’s not a war they can win or is in their best interest . Even saddam with all him money and military and cruel tactics couldn’t get rid of kurds or kurdish so you really think these guys can?

Well only about 30% of the kurdish words i wrote are same in farsi, some may be similar but they’re not the same. Of course there’s a ton of other words which I didn’t write which are same farsi-kurdish that’s why it’s easy for kurds to pick up farsi. Even alot of kurds in iraq can speak farsi. I think the pronunciation is different alot of times. Dari and kurdish generally is spoken faster than farsi. Do you actually speak farsi?
Even without being in iran i can understand 50% farsi based on knowing kurdish

Yes, I am relatively fluent. And while like you said many of them are not the same, many are very similar, up to about one letter or syllable at the end/beginning

If you’re up to it it’s probably a good idea if you can copy the words and sentences i wrote into a table and add a column for farsi

I added a column with persian words to my opening post courtesy Dr Maul
I added more and combined into 1 table. Maybe someone can fill in the blanks for the missing persian ones.
