Murray’s Mother Appreciates the Scenery

WIMBLEDON, England — Mothers can sometimes be mortifying. Take Andy Murray’s mother, Judy, who is also his coach. She has a mom crush on the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, whose pinup looks led her to nickname him Deliciano on Twitter.

Lopez, whose game was beautiful in a straights-set third-round upset of Andy Roddick, is on a collision course to meet Murray in the quarterfinals. After dispatching Iva Ljubicic in four sets on Friday, Murray was asked about his mother’s possible conflict of rooting interest.

“I think it’s about time she stopped with that nonsense,” he said in a tone that suggested he was only half-joking. “Makes me want to throw up. It’s disgusting. Yeah, it’s disgusting.”

Murray turned the mortification tables on his mother recently when he hit with Lopez before a tournament under her watchful eye.

“It’s quite funny because she’d been writing about it on, you know, Twitter all the time,” he said.

Murray continued: “I said when we were warming up, I shouted across the net, ‘Feli, if we sit down for a drink, if you could take a picture with my mom because she thinks you’re beautiful.’ She went bright red.”

Murray quote his mother as saying: “I’m not doing it. I’m not doing it.”

Murray added, “Quite funny. Not like her.”

Lopez was good-humored when asked about Judy Murray’s nickname.

“She’s so funny,” he said. “It’s just something that everybody knows now because somebody post it on Twitter.”

Does he like the nickname?

“I have to like it,” he said. ‘It’s kind of funny. I mean, it’s O.K.”

If Lopez is Deliciano, is he ready to challenge his countryman Rafael Nadal, the defending Wimbledon champion, for the title of most-ogled men’s tennis player?

Lopez insisted that Nadal had many more female fans, Judy Murray notwithstanding.

“I telling you the truth,” he said. “I trying to be honest.”

By the way, his facial bone structure, in particular the upper head, is 100% spaniard. That spaniard unique taste that I share as well. He also comes from a very close Pueblo to my family's regions where maybe is a common trait among some of these regions of Castile, that distintive forehead and craneal shape.
