I've never seen someone's leg do that accidentally on skates. To me, it looks intentional. However, some NHL players are saying they believe it was an accident.

The video cuts out before you see blood and so there is no gore.

I think it was intentional and yet without thought. This happened in a hockey league in the UK (where pretty much career minor league hockey players from North America go at the end of their careers). I don't know their gay laws.

Yes. Moved leg completely unnaturally with intention to hurt the other guy.

Man, I'm not 100% sure. It looks like he wants to throw a check but his timing was off and he was trying to readjust as he was throwing the check and maybe that's why his leg went up.

I never understood why neck guards aren't mandatory.

Clearly it is intentional, in Ice Hockey there is a tactic in case of falls to prevent the blade from hitting your face or neck, however in cases like this it is noticeable that the leg is intentional.

Absolutely horrific, it does look intentional but it’s one of those cases that could potentially be a tragic accident. Can’t imagine how he’s feeling right now.

It seems like a guy randomly decided to be a murderer.

Culpable Homicide.

There's a big grey middle area in that.

He's dead, so who knows.

The whole situation looks like an "unintentional murder" i.e. the other guy purposefuly wanted to kick him (violence happens quite commonly in hockey) but likely without an intent to murder him. So not a premeditated murder but certainly a crime.

i find it funny that the euros here had to chime in.

I've never seen anything like that EVER in hockey. You keep your skates down at all times.

A quote from his former coach: "I coached Matt for a very short stint. I wanted to get rid of him immediately ... He has no respect for himself or his opponents. He used to get into a bit of a mess. He is a very dirty player."

I googled but haven't found an update on this. Last I read, Matt Petgrave was out on bail. He should be in prison.

It looks intentional but it's unclear if he was going to murder him in that way or just wanted to knock him out.

It looks like a solid case of manslaughter to me.
That is not an option. I didn't vote.

I don't follow hockey, but am quite sure that delivering a rearward karate kick high into the air is not standard practice. When we played street hockey in elementary school PE, it was made clear that even the sticks must never go above waist level. (I wonder if kids are still allowed to play that game.) I don't know what his intention was, but when you do something violent that could kill somebody, and they do indeed die, that's most certainly manslaughter.
