Atlantid and subnordic, i think the people commenting below are wrong the blame the tories though, Labour also didn't raise general wages that much and they were suppressed because of E and S Euro immigration.

Germany has had at least as much if not more immigration over the last two decades - both European and non-European - but has managed to keep its wages hire and maintain a more robust manufacturing sector in particular, although it does seem to be in decline now too.

I think in Germany there has always been a much better relationship between workers and management and it seems that managers in Germany seem to be afraid to take the measures managers in the UK have taken by basically taking advantage over cheaper more compliant labour. Unions in Germany were never weakened as much as here.
