I was buying a new computer of late and I was delighted when someone told me about OpenOffice, an open-source Microsoft Office clone.

You can read and compose .doc and .xls and .ppt files with the same layout as you're used to from Microsoft...and it's FREE.

I think that Open Office's functionality is superior to Microsoft Office's too. I use nothing else. :thumb001:

I downloaded OpenOffice for Ceallach some time back now, and we both found it to be just as effective and reliable as Microsoft.

OpenOffice, as well as being free, also takes up a considerably less amount of space on your memory too, which is great for the temperamental heap of s**t I have at the moment.

We only took it off and replaced it with a hacked version of Microsoft when Ceallach found she encountered problems taking her saved work on disk to her work to print and found the computers wouldn't accept it.

Another great software name to look out for is Foxit. I use them instead of Adobe, and again they are free and take less memory.

Could it be the annoying .doc-->.docx thing?

MicrosoftOffice-2007 changed their default save file extension to .docx for some reason.:rolleyes2:

YES! I've been using Foxit for years now. It loads so much faster than Adobe. Open Office, Foxit and VLC are the holy trinity of open source software.

I do use VLC, and quite like the whole new layout that was recently updated onto my system...but! I still prefer to convert the VLC files to AVI. Mostly for practical reasons than anything else.

VLC

And VLC is...?

VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) is the best media player in the universe! Seriously, it's free and it will play every single audio and video format imaginable (except for that Realplayer crap).

As Psychonaut said, but it's also the file such addons as 'Download Helper' (http://www.downloadhelper.net/) convert to when you download Youtube and other videos.

The best thing about OpenOffice (besides being free ;)) is that it saves files in an open source format not owned/copyrighted by any company. This means that in 50 or 100 years these OO files will still be readable somehow. Worst case scenario you have to hire a programmer to write a program to open the files. If Microsoft goes bankrupt, that option is by law precluded.

Download The Combined Community Codec Pack (http://www.cccp-project.net/). I've yet to come across a video file that would not play in any player after downloading it.

yes although you can save as .doc some of the formatting messes up. And I often forget and then have to go home again to change the .odt to .doc

I use this it is good and it got round the fact that my computer point blank refuses to run any Adobe products what so ever.

Thanks for the heads up on Foxit, I will try to find and download that. I absolutely hate Adobe and their crappy software which uses a huge amount of resources and sucks. I used to have VLC player but thought it was some kind of adware when going through my program files and deleted it, might get it again. Office I haven't had any problems with and usually is free anyways, either from burning a copy or it coming with a computer for free.

If they're bankrupt, they aren't going to be able to hire any lawyers to sue you for copyright violation. Whoever they owe money to would take the license anyways if they went bankrupt.

Neither have I. In all honesty, with sites like this (http://www.forumw.org/) around, who would need to?

In what way is it awful? I've been using it (but only to do some day-to-day number crunching ;)) and have no particular complaints.

Well, I have a fully functional Microsoft Office on my computer and didn't pay a cent for it. I just downloaded it from a sharing site. Now, sue me. :coffee:

When you want to do a huge list of calculations in excel you highlight the cell containing the first and then press [Crt] d or r which copies the cell and the calculations down or right, I use this function a lot and cannot find it on OO also some of the coding for equations are awkward to use and it is missing some of the more complicated functions.

Did they ever fix the problem in the 2004 version where it would automatically change functions which were linked to other functions when you changed or moved one of those functions? This feature drove me nuts and caused me to waste loads of time at work going back trying to find what it had changed without even notifying much less asking me and fixing it.

For now it's best free alternative to commercial word software.

Now there's a clone of that too, "LibreOffice" or something like that. Apparently OpenOffice wasn't open enough for some people... :rolleyes2:
