He was 64, she was 42, when they started on the show.

She didn't like having to be made to look older and didn't like having to play the wife of someone much older than her because people would think she was older than she really was. She even once commented that he should be portraying her father, not her husband.

I used to watch this with my grandmother when it came on tv and I never thought she looked younger than he did, so I guess it worked.
