Interesting in Fiume existed significant Italian/Venetian community for centuries and Fiume was never part of the Republic of Venice. They spoke Fiuman (Venetian dialect), today only few percent of people in city speak Fiuman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiuman_dialect
Ancestors of Fiuman speakers were Venetians which arrived to Fiume as merchants, they were urban population. On the other hand Croatians before 20th century lived in surrounding villages. After WW2 Croatians from surrounding places but also from other regions settled to Fiume in a large number; except them many Serbs, Bosniaks, and even Albanians, Macedonians, Gypsies etc. settled to Fiume in Yugo communist period. In that time Fiume/Rijeka was a prosperous city with strong industry, with one of the largest shipbuilders in Europe etc. Rijeka/Fiume is for decades most multi culti and most liberal city in Croatia.

Europe was never saved of Ottomans. They occupied Balkans on several centuries and parts of central Europe on shorter but also long period. They ruled on Budapest about 150 years, and in 17th century occupied Nitra and Komarno in Slovakia on several decades. German world and western Europe were saved of Ottomans due to battles of Vienna 1529 and 1683. In second battle Jan Sobieski and his Poles defeated Ottomans in the last moment. If Poles did not came Ottomans would took Vienna. In long term Vienna was not saved from Turks and other muslims, Vienna is for decades full of them.

The heroic battles against ottomans is not just one nation's privilege. The Hungarian Kingdom was multiethnic, at this time its included some parts of Bosnia too. These christian armies were multiethnic like hungarians, croats, serbs, slovaks, romanians + german, polish, italian, czech mercenaries. They were all heroes and contributed a lot to kick ottomans out.
