LOL. This map places Estonians in northern Latvia, right at the bottom edge of the map, and as separate from "Finnic nations". Somebody must have been confused by the fact that the Esthland territory in the original map of Europe at the death of Charlemagne is mainly inhabited by Balts.
How annoying. I suppose I must re-label it.

It DOESN'T, though! It's the same colour as the Suomenlaisi, and the borders match those of the Livonians in historical times!
The mapmaker could have been a little more ambitious with regard to Lapp claims on Norwegian soil, though...
PS. Great Charlemagne map; 'Turks (Magyars)'
Vintage trolling is best trolling.
By the way, it does indicate nicely how the Estonians own autoethnonym was inherited off the Balts, who got it off the Germanics in the first place... Is your 'Viro' word any older, or is that yet another IE term (Latin virus, English were, Irish fear, Welsh gwyr - 'man' etc.)?

We're talking about Tacitus's day.
You know how names get shifted around. Look how you lads call the Russkies Venee or whatever. Venedi.
Aestii were just 'them fuckers in the East'. Once the westerners started learning the fuckers' actual names, taking more of an interest in eastern fuckery, the old name got shunted ever more eastward. Until you Samoyeds ended up with it... up
