Hodidjed

Hodidjed is first mentioned in 1434 when it was captured by the
Ottomans. It was the only the only fortification in the county of Vrhbosna.

The exact location of Hodidjed is not known, however according to one theory
it was the fortress, which was located on the site of today's White Bastion, mentioned
by passing travelers and Ottoman sources.

Another theory which expands on the previous one says that over time
Hodidjed was slowly transformed into the White Bastion that still stands today.
The above is a visualization of the fortress in the medieval period.

The second major phase of construction, during Ottoman control, saw the construction
of interior buildings such as a mosque as well as on the exterior the addition of a draw bridge
and the digging of a moat in front of the castle.

Sarajevo in flames. In 1697 Eugene of Savoy sacked and burned
the city. After this event it became clear that a larger fortification needed
to be built in order to house more soldiers and civilian refugees.
Here Hodidjed can be seen more prominently.

Here the connection between the two becomes obvious. Though there
were still 3 major phases of construction to the fortress before it became
the White Bastion that's seen today.

The answer to the need for a larger fortification came some time in the
early 1700's with the construction of the walls and towers pictured above.
As well as the repair of Hodidjed and the addition to it of the previously pictured artillery tower.
