Slechts éénmaal heb ik u gezien. Gij waart
Gezeten in een sneltrein, die de trein
Waar ik mee reed, passeerde in volle vaart.
De kennismaking kon niet korter zijn.
En toch, zij duurde lang genoeg om mij,
Het eindloos levenspad met fletse lach
Te doen vervolgen. Ach! geen enkel blij
Glimlachje liet ik meer, sinds ik u zag.
Waarom hebt gij van dat blonde haar,
Daar de englen aan te kennen zijn? En dan,
Waarom blauwe ogen, wonderdiep en klaar?
Gij wist toch, dat ik daar niet tegen kan!
En waarom mij dan zo voorbijgesneld,
En niet, als 't weerlicht, 't rijtuig opgerukt,
En om mijn hals uw armen vastgekneld,
En op mijn mond uw lippen vastgedrukt?
Gij vreesdet mooglijk voor een spoorwegramp?
Maar, Rika, wat kon zaalger voor mij zijn,
Dan, onder hels geratel en gestamp,
Met u verplet te worden door één trein?

Van morgen ijlt mijn tuinman, wit van schrik,
Mijn woning in: 'Heer, Heer, één ogenblik!
Ginds, in de rooshof, snoeide ik loot na loot,
Toen keek ik achter mij. Daar stond de Dood.
Ik schrok, en haastte mij langs de andere kant,
Maar zag nog juist de dreiging van zijn hand.
Meester, uw paard, en laat mij spoorslags gaan,
Voor de avond nog bereik ik Ispahaan!' -
Van middag - lang reeds was hij heengespoed -
Heb ik in 't cederpark de Dood ontmoet.
'Waarom,' zo vraag ik, want hij wacht en zwijgt,
'Hebt gij van morgen vroeg mijn knecht gedreigd?'
Glimlachend antwoordt hij: 'Geen dreiging was 't,
Waarvoor uw tuinman vlood. Ik was verrast,
Toen 'k 's morgens hier nog stil aan 't werk zag staan,
Die 'k 's avonds halen moest in Ispahaan.'
Slaap maar slaap in je baaierd van stilte
De bomen zullen je schaduw geven
Een gazen koelte over je weven
En alles houdt de adem in.

Laet ons den landtman loven
met sanghe ende vruecht,
want hi gaet al te boven
om sijn loyale duecht;
landouwen, sloten, steden
daghelijcx spijst ende voet
met sijn sweetighe leden
den edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.
2.
Hertoghen, prinsen, graven
sullen si zijn ghespijst,
den landtman moet beslaven,
thes recht datmen hem prijst;
als heeren triumpheren
en schaffen huypschen moet,
men siet hem laboreren,
den edelen landtman goet,

Elc doet den landtman toren
waer hi sayt ende plant:
die mollen, blint gheboren,
wroeten naert hem meest meshant;
die coeyen, schapen en swijnen
die comen metter spoet,
en doen zijn vrucht verdwijnen,

daert al by leven moet.

Vron Venus lacke dieren
die doen hem groot gequel;
sijn vruchten niet en vieren,
als si ligghen in haer spel;
si stommelen ende si steken,
al waren si verhoet;
sijn coorne deerlijc breken,
den edelen landtman goet,

Elc besicht daer zijn clauwen
hoenders en voghels vry,
men gaeter ter oeste houwen,
hi en isser niet altijs by;
men soude qualick gheloven
hoe menich ontschamel bloet
trecken en teesen wt sijn schoven,
den edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.

Dan is hi van die papen
om zijn thiende ghequelt,
die costers staen en gapen
om eyeren, schooven oft gelt,
susters ende baghijnen
om hebben elc hen groet;
dus laet hi vanden sijnen
den edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.

Mulstooters, met haer rijven,
om kiekens, koorne en vlas
connen wonder bedrijven;
die vier oordenen, op dat pas,
willen hem Gods rijcke verleenen
met huer bedinghe soet,
mer tes hebben dat si meenen,
vanden edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.

Die iaghers en serganten
die zijn oock geerne verblijt,
want si hem voor terwanten
en boeven hebben bevrijt;
den molenaer van den mele,
als hi ter molen doet,
schept diepe, God weet hoe veele,
vanden edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.

Vossen, fissauwen, fluwijnen
doen zijn hoenders en ganssen stoot;
die wolven, wreet om schouwen,
bijten coeyen en schapen doot;
wesels suypen, so si pleghen,
sijn eyeren onghebroet;
dus commet hem alle tseghen,
den edelen landtman goet,
daert al by leven moet.

Christus die, tonser vrame,
ter eeren den lantman fijn,
sijn bloet ende lichame
schonc onder broot ende wijn,
en, als hi was verresen,
quam als een landtman vroet,
moet in zijn hulpe wesen,
den edelen landtman goet,
daert al bi leven moet.
5, 6. teesen = plukken. - 7, 1. Mulstooter = Muyl-stooter = Kasboeve, d.i. bedrieger die het landt afloopt met eene kas (rive), waarin zich valsche reliquieën bevinden en die aan de boeren te koop aanbiedt; zie beide woorden bij Kil. - 7, 4. De vier bedelorden: Karmelieten, Franciscanen, Dominicanen en Augustijnen. - 7, 8. edelen bijgev. - 8, 3. terwanten = truwanten, vagebonden. - 8, 5-9. Van de korendiefstallen der molenaars weten ook onze liederen te verhalen (Dr. Kalff, Het lied in de M.E., bl. 410). - 9, 1. fissauw = bunzing.
