Assad.
one syrian guy that spoke at my university said that when he was in power, sure some better freedoms could have been given to citizens and people would demonstrate, however nobody would have expected that the demonstrations would have opened the door to the intervention of USA+ISR.
He said they would have never done them if they knew what was to come…

Long story short, back in the 70's Hafez al-Assad (the father) considered that he was tricked by Henry Kissinger, US Secretary of State at the time, for what initially looked like a new type of "Commonwealth" of Arab states, in reality, Kissinger played Arab leaders against each other and since then al-Assad Sr. did everything in his power to take revenge. Terrorist attacks planned and executed by or with al-Assad knowledge (1983 Beirut, Lebanon) was put on Muammar Gaddafi back...Later on, the "Arab Springs" degenerate in a bloody mess, civil and dogmatic conflicts explodes all over making room for radical Islamists to take charge and proclaim their "Holy War" against the "infidels", let countries in ruin. US, Russia, Turkey, and EU got involved in an attempt to protect their self-interests, (not necessarily the same), more civil casualties. Several attempts to reach regional peace some failed, some succeeded, the way to reconstruction is a slowing and painful process.
