Immediately after WWII there was indeed a shortage of educated people (the US had to rely on Operation Paperclip to get it's hard scientists) but the Sputnik spooked out Americans so the Government thought it was best to close the Bibles and get the kids on real books.
USA had gained alot by investing in science, let's hope it keeps it that way.
I'm tired about dumbfucks complaining about NASA expences and at the same time donating to tele-evangelists.

There's a lot of useful inventions, contributions, and interesting discoveries in that long list. Where would the world be without the US?

You misinterpreted what I meant with that sentence. I meant that in Europe we tend to import all the negative elements that originated in/ are dominant in the US (elements of popular culture/lifestyle, television shows, political ideologies, porn, fast food etc.). I didn't mean that we shouldn't exchange knowledge, ideas and inventions that could improve our living standards, or even save lifes. Most Americans' ancestors came from Europe, so we definitely have a common origin and we shouldn't forget this.
A common triat of Americans is that they are extremely superficial in their behavior and the world they create around them. They act as if they're your best friend but it's all theater. This is something many Dutch people think about Americans Of course this is a stereotype but it gets enforced many times over when watching your shows and documentaries.
