The Hague: Parliament in the old hunting lodge/castle (Binnenhof)of the medieaval counts of Holland, to the left, the "tower" that houses the Prime Minister's Office and the Mauritshuis (museum). The water is the so-called Hofvijver, where, on its southern bank, the village (it never received valid city rights) was first born.

Het is het enige kasteel dat graaf Floris de Vijfde rond 1282 in één keer liet bouwen vanaf de tekentafel: de Nuwendoorn bij Eenigenburg. Niet alleen een dwangburcht, maar bij uitstek een kasteel die de waterwegen bewaakte, concluderen onderzoekers. En met de komst van de eerste West-Friese dijkgraven in die tijd, staat het aan de basis van ons huidige waterschap.

De stad die nooit rust, feitelijk geregisseerd door Friedrich von Maydell, staat bekend als de film van Andor von Barsy, in de jaren twintig en dertig een veelgevraagd cameraman in de Nederlandse filmwereld. De opdrachtfilm werd gemaakt om investeerders aan te trekken. Met zijn dynamische cameravoering bracht Von Barsy Rotterdam in beeld als een bedrijvige stad, waar het leven zich concentreert rond de haven. Te zien zijn indrukwekkende opnamen - vaak vanuit de lucht - van verschillende Rotterdamse havens en havenuitbreidingen die de stad moesten opstoten in de vaart der volkeren. Von Barsy richtte zijn camera ook op de historische binnenstad, met fraaie grachten, pakhuizen, bedrijvigheid op kaden en levendige winkelstraten.

Some beauty and calm that caught my eye the past month. An early morning walk along a foggy river with a blood red sunrise, spending the Summer Solstice sitting in a beautiful large willow tree at one of my favourite places surrounding this small town, and lots of gorgeous golden hour moments.

Gardening attempts to keep the slugs and snails away from the strawberries, and trying out David’s new soil block press, which works amazing for growing seedlings. We sowed a lot of different bean species and they’re already starting to cover all the garden walls now, I swear you can watch them grow by the minute.

And some wild encounters with adorable highland cattle calves annoying their mom, a sneaky hedgehog helping us out in our garden, a rare hummingbird hawk-moth, and a bunch of panicky geese.

Some glimpses of my life from the past few months.

In April, I spent a week in Utrecht looking after my aunt's house while she was away. I spent a beautiful misty morning at Amelisweerd, a forest and estate close to where she lives.

This beautiful estate lies on the edge of Utrecht, adorned with centuries-old beech trees and the babbling river “Kromme Rijn”. A green haven loved by everyone who wants to escape the noise of the city.

It was such a nice moment to spend some time in Utrecht, just in time to witness spring make everything start to blossom and bloom.

When I returned home again, David and I worked on transforming our backyard, building wooden raised beds with a mesh cover in an attempt to keep the insane amounts of slugs away from our vegetables - without much success so far. I don't know how it is where you live, but we've never had this many slugs in our garden before.

Luckily since we put nematodes in the soil last week, we got things a bit more under control. I can't wait to show you what our garden will look like.

And I'm taking you out on a little bicycle trip to some neighbouring villages on my little island, for some very Dutch scenes. Just some daily life moments and scenes that caught my eye.

Nederland is zo mooi.

De mummiekelder in het Friese dorpje Wieuwerd (Wiuwert) is één groot mysterie. Er liggen vier eeuwenoude mummies opgebaard. Maar wie het zijn? En hoe het kan dat ze, op natuurlijke wijze, gemummificeerd zijn? Niemand die het weet.
