They are definitely lighter than Southern Europeans though.
Spaniards, Italians and Greeks could all pass individually, but as a group they would look foreign in most parts of the US (except maybe in New York).

When I look at crowd pictures of Germans and White Americans, they tend to look very similar.

The more interesting question is actually "How common is dark hair among White Americans?"

Really depends where in the US you are. The south is mostly English and Scot-Irish with a lot of brown hair and blue eyes. The midwest has a lot of German and Scandinavian. The southwest has a lot of Spanish and Mexican, the rest is a mix bag.
