I saw a quote in an article about this that I found interesting, I'll try to look for it later. Something about how "his sister's tragic fate changed [her brother's] views on domestic violence", since the entire family was at the trial and being interviewed and whatnot. It seemed to imply that he was all for domestic violence until his sister died of it - perhaps that is a normal part of Kazakh culture? The only Kazakhs I know are Russian ones, and Slavic people have a particular brand of misogyny that's undoubtedly different than the Kazakh brand. Perhaps if it is normal there, she may not have been "looking past red flags", maybe she would have thought those things are normal. If it isn't normal there, then maybe she did look past some things. Either way, may she rest in peace and serve as a cautionary tale against marrying weirdo macho angry men with neanderthal mentalities.
