I find "despise" to be an incredibly strong word, especially for something irrelevant to morality. Like, I despise pedophiles and drug addicts - because they are morally bad. And I might have some in-group bias and preference for other whites (to varying degrees based on what kind of white they are), but I don't despise anyone outside of that group for merely existing.

As a European, I don't really mind Americans and other New World people of European descent claiming their European heritage and whatnot, but it isn't quite the same as actually being from there, so I'm not sure how to feel about someone calling it their "homeland". Maybe if it is your parents or grandparents country, and you are very familiar with the culture/language/etc., perhaps even being eligible for citizenship, or spend much of your formative years there and/or in communities of only people from there. But generally, it's something that can only really be claimed rather loosely.

I had this Dominican coworker who fit the description in the OP and he always tried to call out Southern Europeans to make them "non-Euro" while trying to raise himself to "whiter" status as much as possible. Sounds like a sad legacy of colonialism. You can see it with certain South Asians at times too. Each nation has its own things to be proud of, it sucks that attitudes like this are so prevalent.

I also did notice a lot of Central American immigrants in the US have Anglo names like Nelson, Edwin, Edward, Wilson, etc.
