When im talking about "central" i included France & Germany too.
EU is a french-german-benelux oriented thing, of course the EU institutions are located there. Heartland of Europe is not there, but in Italy. Not just the Roman Empire and its heritage, but Italy was the richest and most advanced region in the european history, the Vatican was the capital of christianity, almost every cultural thing comes from Italy, for example renaissance and many other. When most of westernes lived in peaceful prosperity, at this time Poland & Hungary defended Europe from the mongol invasion and destruction. Later these small central folks like slovaks, czechs, austrians, hungarians, romanians, croats and serbs fought heroic battles against ottomans and they defended Europe from the islamization, of course with italian, spanish, polish help. Without these heroes you would wear hijab now and Europe would not exist in this traditional form. So pls dont educate me whats heartland (not Brussels).

Heartland of Europe, at least it's western Christian part indeed is between France and Germany. Strip streching from Flanders trough Alsace and Rhineland all the way south to northern Italy. It corresponds with old Lotharingia, or "middle Kingdom" of one of Charlemagne sons when Frankish Empire fell apart.
This is core of western Christian European civilisation. It's not Central Europe in later meaning obviously, but highest concentration of culture and progress was there.
